The Food Safety Programme is being distributed by BIANZ Executive Officer Belinda Jeursen. Please call (03) 3490663, or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for an updated copy of this programme.

Compulsory food safety programmes are on the way for New Zealand food outlets. The Government is updating New Zealand's food laws to ensure that food business operators deal with risks effectively. The new law means that food business operators will need to actively manage food safety.

These changes will start in July 2008 with a five year changeover period. The date that businesses in each food sector will need to have their Food Control Plan registerd is not yet finalised. It is expected that cafes and caterers will be among the first in the food sector to be brought into the system.

nzfsa-logoIn the meantime, wholesale customers are increasingly demanding food safety assurances from suppliers, and retail consumers are following suit. As a result, all bakeries and cafes will have to implement a Food Safety Programme within the next year or two whether they choose to or not.

The BIANZ Food Safety Programme is the most advanced in New Zealand. The HACCP-based programme is suited to any bakery or cafe and has the approval and support of the New Zealand Food Safety Authority. It meets all foreseeable official and commercial needs for food safety assurance.

Value
Each member implementing the programme ends up with a complete food safety programme tailored for the individual business. A similar programme from any other source would cost a typical New Zealand craft bakery anywhere from $5000 to $10,000.

Support when needed
BIANZ is working in conjunction with independent food safety consultants on the North and South Island, and with AsureQuality.
