The Government is updating New Zealand's food laws to ensure that food business operators deal with risks effectively. The new law means that food business operators will need to actively manage food safety. These changes will start in July 2008 with a five year changeover period. The date that businesses in each food sector will need to have their Food Control Plan registerd is not yet finalised. It is expected that cafes and caterers will be among the first in the food sector to be brought into the system.
The BIANZ Food Safety Programme is the most advanced in New Zealand. The HACCP-based programme is suited to any bakery or cafe and has the approval and support of the New Zealand Food Safety Authority. It meets all foreseeable official and commercial needs for food safety assurance. Value For implementation advice, support or training contact:

In the meantime, wholesale customers are increasingly demanding food safety assurances from suppliers, and retail consumers are following suit. As a result, all bakeries and cafes will have to implement a Food Safety Programme within the next year or two whether they choose to or not.
