BIANZ Attracts 400 Apprentice Prospects at Careers Expo More than 400 students at a recent Careers Expo asked to be sent information about baking apprenticeships.
In partnership with sponsors including Goodman Fielder and Progressive, the BIANZ created an interactive exhibit at the Careers Expo, featuring a fully operational demo kitchen and product sampling area, which was hosted by current baking apprentices. BIANZ Executive Member, Simon Bennett, explains, The exhibit was designed to create a platform to reach out to potential apprentices. We want to get baking in to the consideration set of young people as a desirable, rewarding career. Young bakers currently in the apprenticeship programme were on hand to talk to students about their training, working environments and the doors that a baking career can open up, including travel and a wide range of career options. The three main areas of the exhibit were: Baking Demonstration Bakers from Goodman Fielder manned the exhibit for the duration, creating a range of products, and demonstrating the skills and talents of bakers, much to the delight of student onlookers. The Goodman Fielder got the students involved hands-on literally inviting them to decorate cakes, mix muffins and learn some basic bread making skills. Test Your Bakers Palate Contest Students were challenged to test their bakers palate by determining the difference between two variations of the same muffin, one of which was gluten free, the other made with regular flour. The challenge prompted much discussion and debate. Baking Apprentice Information Area Baking apprentices were on-hand to interact with students and talk about the realities of baking as a career, dispelling myths and shedding light on opportunities. We also aired a Competenz Skills 4 Work baking promotional video throughout the event. The Careers Expo ran from August 8th 11th, and was attended by more than 15,000 Auckland secondary students.
