TipTop Putting Bread in Schools

George Weston Foods (GWF) recently launched a long-term programme called Nourish Our Kids, in partnership with the KidsCan Charitable Trust, which aims to address child hunger in New Zealand – beginning with a donation of 100,000 loaves of Tip Top® Bakery bread to schools each year.


The launch phase of the Nourish Our Kids Programme involves supplying Tip Top® bread to hungry children in deciles one to four primary and intermediate schools throughout New Zealand.

Nelson Produces Young Bread Baker of the Year

Robert Reihana from Quality Bakers in Nelson has won the 2013 "Young Bread Baker of the Year".

The judges said Robert won because of his ability to excel in three key areas: practical baking, theoretical knowledge of baking technology, and presentation of research into consumer attitudes to packaged bread and their changing purchasing habits.

Kidds Cakes Takes Best Buns Trophy

Christchurch bakery Kidds Cakes and Bakery is the winner of BIANZ's Great New Zealand Hot Cross Bun Competition. Their buns were unanimously chosen by the judges as the clear winner in the competition, which had 68 entries overall from around the country.

Kidds Cakes’ focus on flavour was rewarded, with the judges saying the use of lemon juice to marinate the fruits worked well for both the flavour and the texture of the buns.  Chief Judge Mike Meaclem of the Baking Industry Association of New Zealand said the buns had a lovely light texture, and a nice bold look to them with a perfect white cross.

The description of the buns, submitted with the entry, read: “Old fashioned hot cross buns hand crafted using a double fermentation process, with lemon juice marinated exotic fruits, a delicate blend of fresh spices, and a hint of citrus zest, finished with a sweet citrus glaze.” Their buns included sultanas, currants and cranberries.

Folic Acid Fortified Breads List Updated

Goodman fielder, George Weston Foods, Yarrows and Couplands have all responded to the call for the voluntary fortification of bread by introducing specific lines that include folic acid. An updated list of these breads has been made available by the manufacturers.
